The 9th Annual Progressive Festival
It's time for progressives and all concerned folks to gather and network at the 9th Annual Progressive Festival in Petaluma.
This year's speakers include:
Kevin Danaher, co-founder of Global Exchange, addressing global justice and global security; Carolina Bañuelos, candidate for Santa Rosa City Council; Bonnie Faulkner of KPFA's "Guns and Butter;" Peter Phillips, Director of Project Censored and coauthor of "Impeach the President" will facilitate a panel on the subject of impeachment; Evelina Molina, immigrant rights activist. Plus a Panel on Alternative Fuels. Maya Orozco of KPFA 94.1 FM will be the MC this year.
Francisco Herrera and band, will provide traditional and original songs combining Latin American music with blues and jazz styling.
Grassroots Movement will stretch out with political dance theatre performance. There will also be speakers addressing the US wars in the Middle East, Living Wage, United Farm Workers, Youth Issues, Clean Money Campaign, and more. Food and drinks will be plentiful.

‘A Little Piece of Ground’, the novel by Elizabeth Laird, is about a Palestinian boy growing up under the Israeli Occupation. The concert is to raise money to buy copies to donate to local schools and libraries.

NOTED HISTORIAN/AUTHOR SPEAKS IN
SAN RAFAEL

Empire's Workshop looks at Ronald Reagan's Central American policy as kind of a boot camp for the gathering forces of the modern religious and secular conservative movement that now has great influence in Washington. Following his presentation, Grandin will be available for book signing.
Grandin’s book is one of the first books to examine how a preemptive foreign policy in Latin America, which included sponsoring coups, death-squad states, and paramilitary insurgencies, has transformed America's domestic policies, forging today's ruling coalition of neoconservatives, Christian evangelicals, free marketers, and nationalists.
All of George W. Bush's abuses of power--manipulation of intelligence and the media, torture in the name of freedom, illegal wiretaps, and surveillance of antiwar activists--have their most immediate antecedents in Reagan's Central American policy, which in retrospect has to be understood as the first battle in the New Right's crusade to rollback restrictions placed on the imperial presidency in the wake of Vietnam, Watergate, and other scandals of the 1970s.
The road to war in Iraq, Grandin argues, can be traced back to the 1970's and 1980's, when an increasingly internationalist New Right turned to Latin America to avenge Vietnam, and in so doing rehabilitated militarism as a legitimate instrument of state and made free-market capitalism the moral core of American purpose abroad.
Today, much of Latin America is in open rebellion against American domination. Grandin concludes his book with a sobering analysis of these explosive tensions and poses a vital question: If Washington has failed to bring prosperity and democracy to Latin America--its own backyard "workshop"--what are the chances it will do so for the world?

JOIN ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE JARED HUFFMAN
FOR A DISCUSSION OF RANKED VOTING
Jared Huffman, Democratic Party candidate for State Assembly from the 6th district, will meet with Marin Ranked Voting activists on September 27 to learn more about our strategy for promoting ranked voting in local elections. The meeting will include a brief demonstration of ranked voting and a question-and-answer period.
Marin Ranked Voting works to make local government more representative by promoting better methods of choosing public officials in which voters can rank candidates in order of preference. When voters can rank the candidates, election results more accurately reflect the views of the entire community. Ranked voting also increases voter turnout, reduces negative campaigning and--in many situations--saves money.
Republican Party candidate Michael Hartnett and Libertarian Party candidate Richard Olmstead attended our August 23 meeting. Both endorsed ranked voting and joined our list of supporters. Green Party candidate Cat Woods has been an active supporter from the beginning.
Our monthly meeting will be held at the Student Services Building on the College of Marin campus in Kentfield on Wednesday, September 27, at 7:00pm. Everyone interested in better ways of choosing public officials is encouraged to drop by.

Join the SMART campaign team at our Grassroots Kick-Off and Rally for SMART on Tuesday, October 3rd from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Coleman Elementary School in San Rafael. The first 200 SMART supporters at the event will receive a free slice of pizza and salad.
The evening will include live music, and a rally with Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Supervisor Charles McGlashan, and Jared Huffman. Optional training sessions will be offered so that you can feel even more comfortable talking with your friends, neighbors and family about SMART, and why we need the SMART rail-with-trail as a transportation alternative. There will be an opportunity to sign-up to do phone banking, precinct walking, and tabling for the campaign.
The event will be held at the Coleman Elementary School at 800 Belle Avenue in San Rafael, starting at 6:30 PM.
